Principles of safe use of the card, which everyone should know
September 6, 2017
Progressive electronization and technicalization make us pay more and more frequently and more willingly with cards. Today, those who use the card are no longer surprised (as it was a few years ago), because it is a common means of payment and a way of managing money. Our wallets are becoming more and more virtual, and the old, good cash is becoming less and less frequent.
However, do we know how to do it safely using the card every day? Do we even think about it? The following are the rules of safe use of the card, which should be known to everyone
The subject of safe card use (both debit card and credit card) is currently being discussed more and more often. The popularity of this issue results both from the growing popularity of cards themselves as a means of payment and from the new types of threats that arise in relation to e-banking. Although a card is a secure means of payment, it does not mean that its use does not involve any risk, as such a risk exists and it is worth being aware of it.
Do you want to know if you are using your card safely? Answer three questions: First, do you know your PIN and at the same time only you know it? Two: do you keep an eye on your credit card? And thirdly, do you follow what's going on in your account? If you have answered all the questions in the affirmative - congratulations, you know the basic principles of safe use of the card. However, if you have given at least one negative answer, you are all the more welcome to read.
Four digits that can save your life
And if not life, then at least the money in your account. What are you talking about? The fact that you must remember your card's PIN is an absolute must. There's no room for half-measures here. Writing it down on a card, card or phone will not only not help, but in case of theft it will also help thieves.
Are you going to set yourself a simple to remember PIN? It's a mistake, because it's easier to steal or suspect. It's also a bad idea to choose your date of birth, date of marriage or date of birth to your PIN, because thieves also use Facebook and this information can be easily found online if we make it available to the public. And then there's nothing to stop them from... spending our money.
If you do not adequately protect your PIN against theft, you may have trouble recovering funds from transactions that were made with your PIN. In such cases, banks are reluctant to consider complaints in favour of the customer and to refund money to the customer, as the theft is often triggered by "gross negligence on the part of the user". Securing a PIN means not only not carrying it with your documents, but also entering it (whether in the shop or at ATM withdrawals) in such a way that no one can see it.
Look out! Look out!
The extreme way to use a card safely...is to resign from it and use only cash. Getting the latter will enable you to get online loans that are granted quickly, efficiently and without unnecessary formalities. Such money will be credited to your account as soon as a loan is granted to you, so that you can exchange it for "live cash" (you can withdraw the money at the cash desk of your bank).
Be careful... with every penny
We are talking about regular monitoring of what is happening on our bank account, with particular emphasis on the operations we carry out. If any of them raises our doubts this fact should be reported as soon as possible to the bank where we have an account. What is worth looking at are mainly transactions for small and similar amounts and those that we make outside the country. From time to time it is worth to carry out such a check, because only it will allow us to catch possible irregularities. All the more so because we are in a growing hurry and usually do not even remember what we ate for breakfast yesterday, not to mention where and for what amounts we were shopping a week or two weeks ago.
In addition, for both ATM withdrawals and card use, it's a good idea to set limits so that a potential thief cannot deprive you of your life savings at once.
Look out! Look out!
Remember, not every suspicious operation is the result of a thief's actions. Some may be due to an error in the banking system (some banks are more frequent and others less frequent), but in both cases this should be reported as soon as possible.
Don't part with... with your card
If you are making a payment with it, keep a close eye on what is happening to it. Don't let anyone on the pretext of accepting a payment disappear from your sight with your card. In a restaurant, ask the waiter to approach the table with the terminal or go to the staff to pay for the meal. In the shop (unless you are using contactless payments) look at the seller's hand, also check that the amount on the terminal is the same as the amount you were given.
Remember that by giving your card to anyone, you are simultaneously giving them all the data they need to pay with your card on the Internet. And in the era of phones with really good cameras, taking a picture of a card is less than a minute. A moment of inattention is enough to lose your card physically when you have it in your wallet. Therefore, watch your "plastic" and do not part with it even for a moment.
Insurance - your additional security
Can you buy peace of mind and security? Partly so, because most banks offer card insurance against unauthorized transactions for only a few zlotys a month.
As with any insurance, you should read the terms and conditions and a list of what is not covered here before you sign the contract. When analyzing the terms and conditions of card insurance, it is worth noting two things: from when it is valid and what the insurer agrees to bear responsibility for (e.g. whether it will return money to us for transactions with the use of PIN or whether such a situation is not covered by insurance).
Remember that new technologies and security measures do not absolve you from thinking, because you are the best guardian of your money...you. Unfortunately, there is no 100% safe way to use the card or trade money at all. However, you can reduce these risks by using our tips!
