Engagement ring - on which finger do we wear it?
Engagement is a dream moment for any woman. Brides-to-be often imagine what a perfect engagement ring should look like. For men, too, this is an important moment in their lives when, kneeling on one knee, they ask for the hand of their beloved woman. But what to do in such a situation, how to behave, and above all, which finger to put the ring you love on? Of course, we leave the way we propose to men who, knowing their future wives, should know what will give them the greatest joy. However, the question of the finger on which the engagement ring is worn is quite important, and sometimes it can also be a real problem.
Engagement - history
Let's start at the beginning. Where did the tradition of the engagement ring come from, anyway? The history of this custom dates back to ancient times, but at that time they were simple rings, and only later began to use more noble materials such as bronze, gold or ivory. The custom of handing out jewellery during engagement became popular in the Renaissance era. In the Catholic Church, rings were reserved for popes and important bishops. They were to signify marriage to God and the Catholic Church. It was not until the 18th century that engagement rings became widely used, thanks to Pope Innocent III, who made them a symbol of fiancé love. In the United States, in the 19th century, a prenuptial agreement was written during the engagement period, which was to secure the future brides in case the engagement was broken. At that time they also received an engagement ring, which in case of breaking the engagement was to secure the future of the future bride. Such agreements were abolished in the 1930s. All that's left is the engagement rings.
Which finger do we wear an engagement ring on?
If we already know the history of this beautiful tradition, we can move on to deeds. First you have to choose the right ring. It is often said that it should be a ring with a big diamond or diamond. However, like any other jewellery, the engagement ring should also fit the style of the future bride. Not every woman will be an advocate of expensive and giant precious stones. There are also people who prefer simplicity and modesty.
What finger wears an engagement ring on? In most cases, it is the ring finger. However, the choice of hand varies according to tradition. Practically the whole of Europe agrees that it should be the left hand, but in Poland it is the other way round and the engagement ring is put on the right hand. It is connected with the history of Poland in the 19th century. Before the January Uprising, wedding rings were worn at the left hand, and at the right hand, such rings were worn only by widows. After the tragic defeat of the liberation uprising in 1864 as a sign of the mourning of many Polish soldiers, the Polish women put their rings on the warm finger of their right hand. This tradition has survived to this day and until the wedding we wear the engagement ring on our right hand, and on the wedding day it is translated into the left hand, thus making room for the wedding ring.
